One of seven albums compiled by Ph.H. Kuenen with photographs made during the “Snellius expedition” to the seas around the Soenda Islands and the Dutch East Indies, 1929-1930 led by mr. P.M. van Riel. The Snellius departed from the Netherlands on 9 March via Cadiz, Algiers, Alexandria, Aden and Padang to the former Dutch East Indies, where it arrived in Batavia on 20 May. On 27 July 1929, the actual expedition started. To this end, the ship was equipped with two echo sounders, a deep-sea lead anchor, series machines with which temperature observations could be made at any depth and with which water samples could be collected, flow meters, nets, etc. gone. On 15 November 1930, this expedition came to an end when the ship returned to Surabaya.
Most photographs in the seven albums were made by Ph.H. Kuenen and H.C. Hamaker. There was a darkroom aboard of the steamer Hr.Ms. Willebrord Snellius. Professional photographs in the albums (made by Th. Weissenborn, Lehnert & Landrock, Cairo, and others) were bought and added to the albums. Philip Henry Kuenen (Schotland, Dundee 1902-Leiden 1976) who participated as geologist and photographer, studied geology at Leiden University. Since 1934 he worked at the Groningen University, since 1946 as a full professor and also a member of the KNAW. His research mainly concerned marine geology.
Album with 148 photographs; 143 mounted in the album all most all with photo corners and 5 loose loose photographs and 2 negatives. Album 1 with images of departure Den Helder on 9 March1929, sailing with the Willibrod Snellius steamer to Cadiz, Cairo, Alexandrië (visiting the pyramids) and Aden (many picture postcards added).
