Western Medieval Manuscripts

This digital collection comprises codices and fragments dating from the Middle Ages and mostly written in Latin script, some in Greek and Cyrillic script. Their shelfmarks begin with a letter combination in capitals (added below).

Most items that were digitized belong to three (sub-)collections:

  • Codices Bibliothecae Publicae Latini (BPL)
  • Codices Vossiani Latini (Isaac Vossius | VLF, VLQ, VLO)
  • loan collection of the Maatschappij der Nederlandse Letterkunde (LTK).

The other items belong to the following (sub-)collections (mostly named after their former owners):

Barring a few exceptions, the Codices Vossiani Graeci & Miscellanei (Vossius | VGF, VGQ, VGO; MIS) are not included in this digital collection. They have been digitized in collaboration with Brill Publishers and are part of the BrillOnline Primary Sources platform. Free access to this platform is limited to Leiden users with a valid library card (ULCN login via the online catalogue).
