Abstract | The succession of layers at Uenohara Site, Kokubu, Kagoshima-ken. In Southern Kyûshû Incipient and Initial Jomon are well represented. Various layers of volcanic ash facilitate the dating of layers which contain artifacts. From above: the thick, light yellow-brown Akahoya volcanic ash layer deposited by the eruption around 6400 BP of the Kikai Caldera on the bottom of the sea north of Yakushima Island. This eruption fell during the late Initial Jomon. Dark red-brown layer which contains artifacts from the Initial Jomon period. The light colored Satsuma volcanic ash layer formed by eruption P14 around 11,500 BP of Sakurajima Volcano (P1 was the eruption in 1914). Remains of the Incipient Jo |
