Abstract | The Aira Tanzawa volcanic ash layer at Hachijojima, south of Tokyo. Many volcano's are active in Japan and its soil is for an important part built by layers of volcanic ash. In the ancient ash layers in Sagamino Upland, Musashino Upland and Shimôsa Upland, all in southern Kantô region and formed between 30,000-10,000 BP by the ancient Fuji Volcano, are recognized at least ten layers which contain artifacts. The geological sequence of the Kantô region forms a baseline for dating in Japan. The Kantô sequence has been extrapolated to other regions where the stratigraphy is less clear.
