Abstract | Clay figurine (dogû). Middle Jomon. H. 22,0 cm. Sakaue Site, Nagano-ken. Complex patterns of thin lines cover the lower half of the body and legs. The decorative scheme characterizes the figurines of this period. First, a vertical line is drawn from the navel, which is marked by a small protuberance, and curved spatula-shaped lines are made symmetrically under the breasts. The hip is covered with triangular geometric shapes. Such a decorative scheme began to appear at the beginning of the Middle Jomon and developed into the more complex pattern of this example by the second half of the Middle Jomon.
