Abstract | Skull of a Jomon Male. Late Jomon, 20-10th c. BC. H. 18,6 cm, W. 14,4 cm. Yamaga shell midden, Ashiyamachi, Fukuoka-ken. The skeletons of Jomon men have more in common with those of modern Ainu than with the Yayoi who are nearer to modern Japanese. The average Jomon male was 158 cm and female 149 cm tall. They were probably broad-shouldered with relative long lower arms and lower legs. There are hardly regional differences between skeletons of various Jomon populations. Most skeletons seem to belong to relative young people and life expectancy for Jomon people was low. Little is known how Early Jomon humans looked-like as there are few early Jomon skeletons.
