Abstract | The mounded tomb Ishibutai kofun, Asukamura, Nara-ken was excavated in 1933 by the archaeologist Suenaga Masao (1897-1991) from Kyôto University. Earth was removed by means of a truck track and the excavation itself was filmed. The excavation established that the mound had been square and that the tomb chamber had been built with very large stone slabs. The tomb itself had been looted long ago. Around the mounded tomb several tombs were found which were regarded as accompaying Ishibutai kofun. The excavation of Ishibutai kofun was one of the first scientific excavations of a tumuli in the Yamato region. After the excavations the tomb, its mound and its moat were restored. |
