Abstract | At the end of the 20th c. from more than 150 archaeological sites in China evidence of rice remains older than 4000 yrs. BP was found. Rice remains were concentrated in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangzi River. The remains found in the middle reaches of the Yangzi date back even further in time than those from the the well-known sites Hemudu and Luojiajiao in Zhejiang Province. At 3500 yrs. BP rice remains become available from the upper reaches of the Yangzi River. The older remains from Late Glacial-early Holocene, however, were concentrated in the basin of the rivers that flow into a group of lakes and marches such as Lake Dongting and Lake Poyang.
