Abstract | From the series: One hundred poems explained by the nurse (Hyakunin isshu uba ga etoki), signed: zen Hokusai Manji, published by Iseya Sanjirô, censor seal: kiwame The man on the hill is Nakamaro himself and he is surrounded by Chinese friends. He was a nobleman who was not granted permission to return from China to Japan and he was left, according to one source, to die of hunger. Poem: Ama no hara furisake mireba kasuga naru Mikasa no yama ni ideshi tsuki ka mo (When I look over the wide plains of heaven is it the moon rising over the Mikasa mountains in Kasuga? The Mikasa Mountain is just outside Nara. |
