Abstract | From the series: One hundred poems explained by the nurse (Hyakunin isshu uba ga etoki), signed: zen Hokusai Manji, published by Iseya Sanjirô, censor seal: kiwame. Woodcutters are depicted sawing planks out of a large log, while a man looks for a maple leaves in the river. To the right a woman is crossing a bridge with her son who leads a turtle by a string. The poem was written by Harumichi no Tsuraki, a tenth-century statesman, first governor of Iki and later Izumo province: Yamagawa ni kaze no kaketaru shigarami wa nagare no aenu momiji narikeri (the wind has placed a sheet pile in the mountain river they are the only maple leaves which cannot float away. |
