Abstract | Modern Ainu of Hokkaidô and Sachalin are descended from the ancient Jomon population of Japan. Ainu share with some aboriginals of Southeast Asia and the Polynesians together with the Palaeolithic Minatogawas and neolithic Jomon some dental features of Sundadonty. Ainu belong together with some (relict aboriginal) Pacific Rim groups to a pre-Mongoloid substratum. Later Mongoloid immigration from the continent replaced the original population of Japan and modern Ainu represent varying degrees of admixture. |
