Abstract | Signed: Hiroshige hitsu, artist seal: Utagawa In China and Japan bats are considered symbols for good luck. The word for bat (fuku) is homonymous with that for good luck. The haiku to the left reads: Kawahori ya yami ni umareru hane no iro (Bats born from the dark the colour of their wings). In this print Hiroshige seems to be inspired by the Kyoto-based Shijô school. Members of this school aimed for a sketchy style in their paintings and illustrations for books. These small tanzaku were printed three to a block. This one comprises the left design. |
