Abstract | Flame (kaen) style pottery. Umadaka Site and Iwanohara Site, Niigata-ken. Mid Middle Jomon. Flame pottery appeared gradually in the Shinano River basin in Niigata-ken but then spread across an extensive area along the Japan Sea coast. Formerly it was often thought that these elaborate vessels were ritual wares. Since then many vessels have been found with soot adhered to them and the vessels are now thought to have been practical wares for daily use. The elegant quality of Flame pots makes them stand out amoung the other pottery styles of the Jomon. Nevertheless the Flame style was one of the shorter lived of all the Jomon styles.
