Abstract | Stone point and partly ground axe, Mikoshiba Culture. Early Incipient Jomon. L. 19,8 cm (axe). Mikoshiba Site, Minami Minowamura, Kamiinagun, Nagano-ken. At the lower part of the axe where the cutting edge and the area above it were ground, are small pockmark like holes: they were formed when after the rough form of the axe was formed by removing chips the surface was assiduously beaten to give the stone implement its round form. This beating of the stone became in the Jomon period a common technique with ground stone implements. The raw material came from the Chûbu region and from Kôzushima, an island off the Izu Peninsula.
