Abstract | Reconstruction of a Jomon meal based on findings at Satohama shell midden, Miyatojima, Miyagi-ken. Bones found at Satahama show no traces of roasting or grilling and fish and meat were probably cooked in pottery vessels. Oysters and other molluscs were possably eaten raw. The diet at Satohama showed seasonal differences. Right: a soup from fish caught in winter, meat from migratory birds and see-weed. Left: bread and biscuit-like foodstuffs made from nuts. |
