Title | Section 15 from QINGMING SHANGHE TU "Going upstream on the Qingming festival". A T-junction in the main street outside the city wall. Above, on the left, beginning of the road along the city moat, with various shops; in the left upper corner a Buddhist monastery with closed main gate, and a monk standing in front of a side entrance. Pigs scavenging on the road. In the foreground, to the right, a view inside a small restaurant; to the right two carts drawn by oxen, and various stalls. A man with large hat and fan on horseback, a servant leading the horse, is preceded by another boy "clearing the way" (shouting and waving). Central scene: a gentleman has dismounted from his horse and is talking to someone (probably a lady) inside one of two sedan chairs; the sedan chairs are followed by two servants carrying luggage. Above, to the right: the entrance of an official building with drowsy guards, their spears standing against the wall. The wall has sharp points, narrow ditch with bridge in front. A horse lying down in the first courtyard (see section 14). |
