The central place that the Festschrift For Roman Jakobson occupies, shows how promi nent an author Mouton Publishers considered Roman Jakobson. On the third row from the top there are some volumes from the Slavistic printings and reprintings series. At the left on the top row, partly shoved behind another book, is Noam Chomsky’s Syntactic structures, which had just come out in the Janua linguarum series.
