NOTE TO THE READER In Part One of the series ‘Literature of Bali’ the drawings on paper from the Van der Tuuk Collection have been reproduced. These were made by Balinese artists for Dr. Herman Neubronner Van der Tuuk during his stay in Bali from 1870-1894. Their purpose was probably to serve as a visual appendix to the Kawi- Balinese-Dutch Dictionary which Van der Tuuk had to compile, as many references to the drawings are made in the dictionary. It is possible that the draw ings were not included in the dictionary because Van der Tuuk died before it was printed. The major part of the collection arrived in Leiden in 1896 as part of Van der Tuuk’s legacy which was bequeathed to the University Library. The drawings were numbered (Nos. 1-307) and added under Or. 3390 as an appendix to the Supplement to the Catalogue of Javanese and Madurese Manuscripts of the Leiden University Library in 1911 by H. H. Juynboll. In 1982 the collection was enlarged with three more drawings (Or. 17.994, 1-3). They were made by the same artists as the above drawings, but were first sent by Van der Tuuk to a friend or colleague in England. Via a book-auction they came later to Holland. All the drawings are reproduced in this Volume. The reproductions have been given a short caption in order to provide an impression of what is represented. A more elaborate description is to be found in Volume Two. This is being pub lished at the same time as Part One, and forms a whole with it. The drawings are presented in a separate volume so that the user can read the description and see a drawing at the same time without the inconvenience of turning the pages of one and the same volume. In the drawings and in the captions and descriptions many references are given in Balinese as well as in Old Javanese. For Balinese the official spelling current at this time and contained in the Kamus Bali-Indonesia is used. For Old Javanese the spelling-rules devised by Zoetmulder and used in his Old Javanese-English Dictionary are applied, with the exception of the velar nasal which is transcribed with ‘ng’. The drawings were made by fourteen artists from various parts of Bali. Only two of them inscribed their name on the drawings. The name plus a drawing by a third artist were found in literature, and I have thus been able to ascribe many other drawings from the collection to him. The other artists, however, are given a number which is added in the captions of the colour plates simply to provide the reader with an idea of the colour-palette characteristic of a particular artist. An introduction dealing with the purpose of the drawings, the artists, their styles and the subjects represented is given in Part Two. A bibliography and an index are also included in Part Two. a
