MSS of the KITLV The second biggest collection of Malay MSS is that of KITLV in Leiden. For more than a hundred years after its foundation, this institute was situated in The Hague and in 1966, transferred to Leiden. The Malay MSS have been described by Ph.S. van Ronkel in the Catalogus der Maleische Handschriften van het Koninklijk Instituut voor de Taal-, Land- en Volkenkunde van Nederlandsch- Indië (Catalogue of Malay Manuscripts of the Royal Institute of Linguistics and Anthropology of the Netherlands-Indies), BKI 60 (1908): 181-248 and Aanvulling der beschrijving van de Maleische en Minangkabausche handschriften, benevens een Atjèhsch handschrift, in het bezit van het Kon. Instituut voor de Taal-, Land en Volkenkunde van Nederlandsch-Indië (Supplement to the description of Malay and Minangkabau, with the addition of an Acehnese manuscript, in the possession of the Royal Institute of Linguistics and Anthropology of the Netherlands-Indies) published in BKI 103 (1946): 555-603. All the MSS mentioned in this publication and later acquisitions are included in this catalogue. South Sumatran MSS and Malay letters have not been described in previous catalogues. MSS of the KIT Another important collection of Malay MSS is that of the KIT (The Royal Tropical Institute) in Amsterdam. These MSS consist mainly of MSS collected by F.W. Stammeshaus, a former civil servant and conservator of the Atjeh Instituut (Aceh Institute), in Aceh and have been described by Ph.S. van Ronkel and H.T. Damsté in De Arabische, Maleische en Atjehsche Geschriften van het Volkenkundig Museum, Aanwinsten op ethnografisch en anthropologisch gebied van de Afdeeling Volkenkunde van het Koloniaal Instituut over 1934. MSS of the MUSEUM VOOR VOLKENKUNDE Because the renovation of the building prevented access to the South Sumatran MSS, their physical description is omitted.
