A different material used for writing rencong script is bamboo. This can be a bamboo cane consisting of several internodes. Each internode functions as a page of the MS. There are also MSS written on a bamboo-tube consisting of one internode only. But in general bamboo-MSS consist of a number of bamboo strips with a hole at one end to string them together. The writing is on the epidermis of the bamboo strips. A more durable material used for writing MSS in rencong script is horn. This can be buffalo horn, cow horn or goat horn. The writing is inscribed on the outer part of the horn. Sometimes the horn is split in two halves and the writing is inscribed on the outside. An example of this type is found in the KHA. The two halves of the buffalo horn contain the same text, defining the boundary between two territories, Tulang and Baringin. Rotan is also used for writing in rencong script, but is not found in libraries in the Netherlands.
